Introducing Imago's vocal dysphoria coach
Many of us have discovered during our medical transitions that the most challenging aspects are often not the ones we initially anticipate. For me, removing facial hair proved to be a far more painful, tedious, and difficult procedure than undergoing four surgeries. However, the aspect that causes me the greatest dysphoria is my voice, a very common issue among trans individuals of all genders. Vocal dysphoria tends to be persistent and is often more difficult to overcome than visual-based dysphorias. I know that many of you struggle with this painful inability to express your true selves with your voice.
Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I introduce Edith, Imago's new vocal coach and a kind, lovely trans person. This service is available exclusively to our subscribers, and there is no initial fee required to become a subscriber. Each full session is priced at €120. To book a session, please email us.
As is our custom, Edith will introduce themself to you:
Hi everyone!
My name is Edith (they/them), and I’m a trans voice coach. I offer speaking and singing gender-affirming voice lessons for people of all genders, with a very individualized approach centered on vocal exploration, health, enjoyment, and gender euphoria. I help students with a variety of vocal goals, including altering one’s speaking voice in feminizing, masculinizing, or neutralizing ways; navigating vocal changes experienced by people on testosterone hormone therapy; singing in a way that reflects one’s gender; and much more.
My approach is informed by my own journey of understanding and exploring my gender as a queer non-binary/agender person. I am a performing jazz vocalist with a degree from The New School For Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. I have more than a decade of experience teaching vocal technique through singing, and have been teaching trans voice alteration since training with Renée Yoxon in 2021. I understand the importance of having a safe and accessible space for you to find your voice, feel like yourself, and feel comfortable navigating the gendered world we live in. Although all of this might feel daunting at first, I promise that this journey won’t take forever and that soon enough you’ll be able to have the voice you want all the time
In our lessons, we will work together to assess and focus on your personal wants and needs. When working on voice alteration, we generally start by learning the different sound qualities of the voice as they relate to gender and how to modify them. We then use exercises to explore these sound qualities and figure out what you want your target voice to be, and build a practice regimen to slowly make your target voice into your new everyday voice. Through this process, we will also talk about the anatomy behind voice production, vocal health concerns and good habits, as well as understanding how we speak in different gendered ways from a cultural perspective.
I am fluent in English and French, and the tools and skills we’ll be practicing together will help you alter your voice no matter what language you speak. I offer both 50-minute and 30-minute sessions.
This is your voice, your tool to express yourself, and my aim is to accompany you and support you through this vocal exploration in whatever way feels good to you.
Looking forward to meeting you!
